Taxes came into question my second year I signed in France. My luck then, I was dating a french citizen, now my wife, who ask me the question "Did you file your taxes?" Of course I had a clueless look but nevertheless that simple phrase can get anyone's attention understanding the implications in the USA if you ever forgot to pay "Uncle Sam". My goal is by providing the following information will help avoid being subject to tax penalties for failing to report earnings to "Oncle Jacques"(maybe the France equivalent).
Here are a some key points to know about taxes in France:
First season in France; your salary is charged a based tax
Creating equivalent of French Tax ID number
Declaring your household situation (married/single, dependents)
Filing season tax refund can only be issued to a French bank account after 3 month delay
I have the pleasure of knowing a former basketball professional and now friend from the ATL that recently put together a presentation about the tax break down structure here in France. Below is a short 1 minute video available to view and for download that provides detailed information that is translated in English. You can pause the video to digest the information.
